#CubaNow Statement On President Obama's Upcoming Trip To Cuba
#CubaNow Press Release
Feb 18, 2016
MIAMI- #CubaNow Executive Director Ric Herrero issued the following statement today following the news President Barack Obama will travel to Cuba:
“#CubaNow applauds President Obama’s decision to go to Cuba, the first sitting U.S. president in nearly 90 years to do so. Since the U.S. and Cuba first announced the normalization of ties in December of 2014, our two countries have re-engaged on a level not seen in decades. And with his visit, the president will have a uniquely powerful opportunity to share his vision for a brighter tomorrow with the Cuban people.
“While some may politicize the president’s trip as premature or argue that the Cuban government does not yet deserve it, it is an argument that misses the point. With President Raúl Castro stepping down in two years, the Cuban people will be facing no small number of uncertainties and challenges on the road ahead. As we said earlier this year, they will be looking for a tangible moment that demonstrates that America stands ready to help them build a more open and prosperous future. There could not be a better time for President Obama to speak directly to them about the renewal and strengthening of U.S-Cuba relations. Both sides of the embargo debate should be able to agree that there is no single more powerful promoter of American values than an American president. And there are none more deserving of the chance to hear them than the 11 million Cubans living on the Island.”
